Pittsburgh Public Schools Science Homework Calendars

The Pittsburgh Public Schools implemented hands-on science for grades K–5 in 1994. To enhance the program and address concerns about opportunities for homework, a group of dedicated educators, led by Jim Simeone, Pittsburgh District Science Specialist, created the Science Homework Calendars.

"We realized the importance of homework—that it provides an opportunity for students to practice and reinforce science skills and knowledge outside the classroom," notes Simeone.

The Pittsburgh Public Schools Science Homework Calendars provide additional benefits, such as:

  • Offering students a variety of activities to complete
  • Providing activities that meet state science standards
  • Reinforcing skills across curricula
  • Making accessibility easy, through distribution in class and on-line at school
    and local Pittsburgh libraries.
